We’ve already had one busy holiday weekend this summer.
Now we’re about to hit what is probably the busiest one of all.
The weekend around 15 August is huge in Spain.
People are travelling everywhere.
Some are starting their holidays.
Some are finishing them.
Lots of towns are celebrating local fiestas.
And the roads are going to be packed.
If you’re driving this weekend, don’t expect your usual journey.
Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
Seriously.
Traffic jams aren’t a competition.
Don’t let a good day become a bad story
Summer is all about making memories.
Days at the beach.
Festivals.
Late-night meals.
Meeting people.
Road trips.
But none of those memories are worth risking because somebody thought they were “probably OK to drive.”
I’ve heard people say:
“I only had one.”
“I’ve eaten loads.”
“It’s only a short drive.”
The problem is that alcohol changes the way we think.
Which means the person deciding they’re safe might already be making poorer decisions.
That’s why I keep things simple.
If I’m driving, I’m drinking nothing.
Zero.
No guessing.
No calculating.
No wondering the next morning whether I got away with it.
We’re all sharing the same roads
Remember that lots of people driving this weekend won’t know the roads very well.
Some have just arrived from another country.
Others are driving unfamiliar hire cars or motorhomes.
Be patient.
Leave space.
Don’t get angry.
A calm driver makes better decisions.
And better decisions help everyone get home safely.
Have an amazing holiday.
Just make sure getting there safely is part of the plan.
